Songs of Ascent: refers to Psalms 120–134, a collection of 15 songs in the Book of Psalms.

Historically, they were sung by Jewish pilgrims as they made the uphill journey to Jerusalem for major annual festivals. Jerusalem is geographically located on Mount Moriah, making any travel toward it a literal "ascent". This pilgrimage was required for the three annual festivals: Passover, Weeks (Pentecost), and Tabernacles. The ascent was both a physical journey and a spiritual metaphor for moving closer to God.
